How do you remove excess glue from a balsa bridge?

Wipe wet wood glue, scrape dried glue with a knife, and avoid the problem with less glue and wax paper. Why cleaning up saves weight.

Short answer: wipe wet glue with a damp cloth or a toothpick, and trim dried glue with a sharp knife. Better still, use less glue in the first place.

Wet wood glue

Wipe squeeze-out with a toothpick, or a cloth dampened with a little water, before it sets. Don't smear it into the grain, which leaves a film and adds weight.

Dried wood glue

Scrape with the flat of a sharp blade, or sand lightly, taking care not to cut the wood. A thin film left on the surface is better than gouging the stick.

Super glue

Don't wipe wet CA, because it smears and can bond skin. Let it dry, and trim with a blade. Applying less with a pin avoids most of it.

Prevention

  1. Use a small amount on one face and press the pieces together. See gluing joints.
  2. Protect the plan with wax paper, so the bridge doesn't stick to it.
  3. Apply with a pin or toothpick, not straight from the bottle.

Every bead of leftover glue adds mass with no strength. A coach's rule of thumb is glue under about 5% of the bridge's mass. See where to cut weight.
