Can I use a bridge kit or pre-cut sticks in a contest?

Usually the rules decide: some contests supply sticks, some allow pre-cut or pre-notched parts, others require you to cut everything yourself. How to check.

Short answer: it depends on the rulebook. Some contests supply the sticks, some allow you to cut or notch parts ahead of time, and some require every cut to be made by the students. Read the materials and building sections, and ask the organizer if it isn't clear.

What to look for

  • Who supplies the material, and whether you may bring your own.
  • Whether parts may be pre-cut or pre-notched before the day.
  • Whether kits, templates or jigs are allowed.
  • Who must build it: many contests say the students must build the bridge themselves.
  • Whether outside help is limited, including tools and AI. See using AI fairly.

If the rules aren't clear

Write down the exact question, such as "May we bring sticks cut to length in advance?", and ask the organizer in writing. Keep the reply. If you can't get an answer, take the stricter reading.

If kits are allowed

A kit gives you a design, not a good result. You still need to cut accurately, sort sticks, glue well and test. See step-by-step building.
